Single Speed & Fixed Gear Bikes Buying Guide
If you are new to fixies then you have come to the right place. There are loads of factors to consider before buying a fixed gear or single speed bike. Buying a single speed bike is very much a personal choice based upon the riders needs, finance and individuality. Whilst these factors are a decision you need to make by yourself what we have done, here at bikesfixedgear.co.uk is create a checklist of the important technical information to assist with your decision.
Why go Single Speed?
The essence of riding single speed bike is about simplicity, reliability and personality. In today’s increasingly expensive, hectic lifestyle the need for maximum function with minimum maintenance has seen a rapid growth in the number of cyclists riding single speed bikes.
As the name suggests a single speed bike eliminates the need for multiple gears reducing the maintenance, weight and need to replace components.
Single speeds are the stable workhorse choice for riders clocking up regular city miles used globally by many professional couriers.
Freewheel or Fixed?
With single speed bikes there are three types of rear hub. These are known as freewheel, fixed or flip/flop. A freewheel hub is much like the common bicycle which allows for the back wheel to turn when rolling back or forwards without engaging the rear cog, drive chain and chainset. With a fixed rear hub the rear cog is permanently engaged with the rear cog, drive chain and chainset, and a flip/flog hub allows for the choice for riding both.
